Cavern and Cave Diving
The Cenotes are freshwater-holes in the jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula and formed due to collapse of the porous limestone rock. These windows into the underground rivers of Yucatan allow us to enter into the huge labyrinth of flooded caves beneath the earth. During the rainy season all of the rain goes straight into these underground river systems.
Today these beautiful oases in the jungle are the location for open water, cavern, and cave dives.
Caverns can be anything from little rooms inside a stone wall up to huge halls which are the entrances of big complex cave systems. All of them are overhead environment, which means that the diver does not have the possibility to ascend directly to the water surface. For cavern diving we use these entrances and we dive a max. Penetration of 60 ft from the nearest air surface. We have a really relaxing diving with a max. Depth of 60 feet and a minimum water temperature of 25 degrees Celsius all through the year. Cavediving begins just where the cavern diving ends. The diver passes through the cavern limits and enters a world of complete darkness. With their lamps the divers often penetrate hundreds of meters into the system. In each of the known caves there is a light nylon guideline to help with navigation.
