If you’re visiting our gorgeous hotel in Tulum, but crave for a unique exploring experience, get ready for one of the greatest adventures of your life! One of the most popular things to do near Tulum is visiting Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of the most visited sites in Mexico, deserved titles indeed! Keep reading as we uncover this magnificent site´s qualities. We have here one of the most emblematic archaeological sites of all the Mayan culture and possibly the most popular, which means that the experience of visiting this special archaeological site is a must.
Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan peninsula, halfway between the city of Valladolid and Merida. Established as an ancient Mayan city believed to be a ceremonial or religious center prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas and the subsequent conquest, visiting Chichen is considered a must for some travelers. Sure you’ve seen the photos of the Kukulkan Temple, that big pyramid and also the huge Sacred Cenote… they’re both found in this place! A visit is filled with a unique feel. You’ll be amazed by the special energy that converges in this important Mayan site.
If you’re planning a visit to Chichen Itza, here are some recommendations so you enjoy a great experience.
It is best to arrive early, as it is one of the most popular sites in the world, and it may get crowded in the afternoon, and your photos may not be as expected. Also, keep in mind that the weather may get extremely hot, so it’s better to visit early in the morning or after 4 pm. Chichen Itza opens its doors to the public starting at 9:00 a.m.
Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a cap or hat or even an umbrella to protect you from the sun, and remember to always keep hydrated! Bring enough water, comfortable shoes (we strongly recommend not wearing sandals or flip-flops, you’ll be walking for a while) and fresh clothes.
By now we’re sure this is already in your bucket list… but: How to get to Chichen Itza from Tulum? Our best suggestion is that you book an excursion, so you don’t have to worry about anything else than enjoying! Most tours include ground transportation, lunch, entrance to the site and a visit to one of the cenotes that can be found in the surroundings, where you can cool yourself and enjoy swimming in crystal clear waters and marvel with its natural beauty. Keep in mind that this experience may take a whole day from your vacations, but you won’t regret it. Tour prices vary around 80 USD per person.
Another excellent and perhaps even more comfortable way is to rent a car, this way you’re in control of your time and you can even stop in one of the many towns found on the way from Tulum to Chichen Itza for shopping or enjoying some local food. You can also get there on public transportation from the ADO bus station in Downtown Tulum, but we wouldn’t recommend this option as it will take a lot of time and it’s not as comfortable. Finally, it is also a good idea that your visit is guided (authorized professional guides can be hired on the entrance) unless you’re an archaeologist or an avid Mayan history expert. You’ll enjoy a better experience knowing exactly what you’re seeing, right?
Don’t forget to ask your personal concierge for more tips on how to get to Chichen Itza, one of the best experiences in Tulum.
