One of the most amazing places in Mexico and probably the world can be found pretty close to our gorgeous hotel in Tulum.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is the largest protected area in Mexico as it covers a 120 kilometers area. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. The area is comprised of magnificent sites such as cenotes, beaches, dunes, a tropical jungle, and coral reefs. Hence an immense variety of flora and fauna, birds, marine life and terrestrial animals live in this paradisiac place. Although the Reserve is not to be considered a touristic spot, there are more than enough reasons to venture and discover this awesome site. Especially if you’ve already come this far, right?

What to do in the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve?

This incredible and immense site is a source of inspiration for anyone who has a spirit of adventure, so get ready for an experience you will never forget. Whether you travel alone or in the company of friends and family, a visit to Sian Ka’an is something not to be missed. Although some areas are banned from the public, others can be visited respecting certain routes. For example, you can visit the archaeological site of Muyil, which was an important point of the Mayan commercial route. It has a spectacular lagoon of the same name and a viewpoint from where you can photograph the lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. There’s also a path that leads to the lagoon, where you can book a fun boat excursion through the canals.

If sailing is not your thing, you can also go adventure by land. The entrance to the reserve is right at the end of the hotel zone in Tulum and you can follow the track till you get to the beautiful town of Punta Allen, where you may find some accommodation options. Keep in mind that it may take you up to 5 hours in a regular car as the roads are not in the best condition, so it’s better to ride a Jeep or any other 4x4 vehicle, or else you won’t make it very far, especially with bad weather. If you decide to go on your own, you can visit one of its many virgin beaches; some of the few locals that inhabit this place offer camping spots on the beach for rent, but you’ll need to bring all your camping gear. As usual, our best recommendation is that you book a tour and trust the experienced guides take you on this fantastic adventure.

Recommendations for your visit to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve in Tulum:

First of all, respect the environment, the animals and the flora. Remember that you are visiting a pristine, almost paradisiac protected area. For your photos, use telephoto lenses to avoid approaching wild animals. Always use biodegradable products such as sunscreen and repellent (you’ll need a lot!) and collect any garbage that you may generate. As said before, the best way to enjoy this amazing spot is by booking a tour; Most of them offer a wild jeep ride through the paths and they take you to Punta Allen to enjoy the best seafood you’ve ever tried. Ask your concierge about the best options for visiting Sian Ka’an.
